So the following is just a bit of fan fiction I wrote whilst my brain slowly works on original material. I decided to write it after watching the new Man of Steel teasers. If you like it- cool deal. this is just the very beginning of an origin of Superman. I figured since it wouldn’t do anything other than sit on my computer I might as well share it. Who knows maybe someone likes it?
Planet to Planet, Father to Son: Jor-El to Kal-El
“Our world is dying. We were going to be the gods of our ancestors, but in our effort to create we guaranteed our death. I’m composing this message for you now, son, while there is still time left before the end, so that when you are ready you can understand why I have done what I have,” Jor-el said standing on a terrace overlooking the winter-covered landscape.
“For you to understand I must start at the beginning. Long ago Rao, our primary star, was once part of a triple stellar system. From what our greatest scientists have been able to determine a fantastic creature of unknown origin which we have dubbed a Sun-Eater consumed two of the stars in this system. In the aftermath they destroyed the first Krypton and left behind a curtain of exotically mutated matter that distorted the space within 10 light years causing it to be nearly impossible for space travel. This matter we named Kryptonite after the first Krypton.
“On the second Krypton that developed in the wake of the Sun-Eater’s dinner a great people grew and prospered. Through great struggles and titanic advancements our people created a functioning utopia. We discovered science that allowed us to know the absolute inner workings of the cosmos. We eventually came to the consensus to try to recreate the universe- our own reality where we could create and manipulate on a scale that attempted to escape our comprehension. We dreamed to do previously unimaginably incredible things. Our culture invested itself into this like nothing seen in a thousand years,” Jor-el said with a faint hint of excitement from a time long gone in voice.
“We failed with disastrous results. We created a phantom shadow of the universe, and like parents who have suffered through a miscarriage our society was left feeling empty and devastated. We had so much hope, so much of ourselves invested into the project that it was hard to accept the failure. Some of us like Lara and I moved on, but we were left devoid of direction and motivation.
“But this failure was only the destruction of our spirits and not our bodies. It was not what lit the fire of our deaths. When we started the project we powered a number of support systems through geothermal power as was a standard for us. When we started our system there was a power surge which caused the simultaneous failure of the project and caused catastrophic damage to the geothermal power. Despite a number redundancies and fail safes to prevent such an event the surge caused irreversible damage to the core of the planet. The damage has caused the core to slow its rotation to an eventual halt before becoming so unstable that it will eventually explode. I will watch as our great planet becomes unbearably cold and desolate in its final days. I will live as Krypton goes from a paradise to a nightmare of itself.
“As I said, I have not given up hope for our society. I moved on, and since I know our people will die with our world I choose to give the rest of the universe that we have been isolated from the best of Krypton. Kal-El, my son, I have made you from myself and my true love, Lara. I have given you astounding power to protect not only yourself, but others. I have given this to you knowing and hoping you will become the final gift of Krypton- an ideal made real to live up to- the ultimate ideal of truth, freedom, justice, wisdom, and altruism for all to aspire from the greatest of Krypton’s thinkers.
“I’m creating a prototype vessel to move past the distorted space to transport you to a world much like Krypton’s past. I will send you there to grow into something spectacular- to lead them into a bright future, but I will not be able to join you- to watch you grow into a man from the tiny embryo you are now. I would not survive the journey- no Kryptonian would- which is why I have placed all my hope into this vessel as your mother watches over you to make sure you grow safely away from the radiation which has made it impossible for us to join you. If all goes well I will be there in spirit when I transfer mine and Lara’s consciousnesses into the vessel. Kal-El I wish only the best for you, but I fear what you might suffer in your lifetime. Kal-El of Krypton, I love you with all my being and I hope the greatest life for you.”
*Shortly after this Krypton will explode with Kal-El launching from the planet in the final moments, causing a trail of slower moving kryptonite to head in the direction of Earth which will land around twenty-odd years later. Jor-El and Lara-El will embrace each other one last time exclaiming their love for each other before the fire of a dying planet engulfs them.
